The following Geohashers have won the No Trespassing consolation prize. The prize can be claimed when you attempt to reach a geohash, but are unable to reach the coordinates due to it being on private property or a restricted area. Bonus points if you get a picture of the geohash location (taken from public property). Obtaining permission from the property owner to get to the actual coordinates invalidates the No Trespassing geohash and instead qualifies the geohasher for the Ambassador Achievement. Collecting the No trespassing consolation prize a hundred times will earn you the Posted achievement. Trespassing beyond the posted sign invalidates the geohash itself and is against the spirit of the sport.

Legislations

Relevant legislations for your country:

  • Canada: Varies by province, although trespassing after dark is covered by federal law (and will get you a criminal record!)
    • Alberta: [1] Public places are fair game, unless local law prohibits it.
  • Germany: As a rule of the thumb, access is free to unused land (meadows, wasteland) and forests for recreational purposes unless befriedet, i.e. fenced or otherwise marked as private. Nature reserves have each their own rules that often restrict access to public ways. Exact legislation differs between states, some states plan to restrict forest access.
  • Norway: Freedom to Roam - how a trespassing legislation should look like.
  • Switzerland: Freedom to roam in Switzerland
  • Sweden: Freedom to roam in Sweden
  • Finland: Freedom to roam very similar to other Nordic countries
  • US:
    • NY: "Trespassing is illegal even on unposted property, unless it is unimproved, apparently unused and unfenced (or not otherwise enclosed to exclude intruders.) ... Anyone asked to leave the premises, posted or not, by the landowner, occupant or other authorized person, must do so immediately." NY DEC
